John Purcell was born in Dublin, Ireland, and currently lives in Los Angeles, California.

He has performed on a number of house improv teams at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York City.

Business Work, a web series he wrote, directed, and starred in from 2014-2016, was listed as one of the top five web series of 2014 by Splitsider, and as one of six online comedy series that deserve to be on TV by Entertainment Weekly.

He was a contributing writer for the Onion News Network and his writing has also been featured in McSweeney's.

He was an interactive writer and producer for The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore on Comedy Central.
